The Durban University of Technology (DUT) sports introduced campus league for the first time on the 1st of September 2022 for various sports to participate.
Nonjabulo Shangase the manager of the first year students netball team, said leagues have existed in DUT before but they ended up being attended by resident students. That is why the sports officer decided to start this league to accommodate all students.
"The league is called campus league, in the institution we have different leagues but most of these leagues end up being attended by students who reside in DUT residences. That when sport officer decide to start the league where every DUT student from different facilities and staff member to join and play together," she mentioned.
Shangase said creating the first year team was a challenge and she is confident that they are going to win the league.
"It wasn’t easy to create the first year team as we have many of the students who wanted to be in a team but we made sure that all first year residences are represented. For them to play well on this season I make sure that they have enough training and support from their residences. Definitely, they are going to win because I can see the dedication and discipline," She said.
One of the first year team players Nomzamo Mbambo said she is very happy to be representing the first year's as it her first time to get the opportunity to play in the university.
"I'm over the moon because I will be representing first year's and it is my first time in University but I got the opportunity to play. We are training and learning new things and we also watch netball games to improve and studying new things that we didn't know," she said.
