A politician born and bred in the semi-rural area of Hammarsdale outer west of Durban, attested that growing in such a politically affiliated area during the time of the apartheid government, politics was the only way to go.

Themba Mvubu, chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) eThekwini region and the eThekwini Municipality PR Councillor fell deeply in love with politics at the age of 18 as he was exiting high school.

“I think it was 18 when I was about to exit high school, or when I was exiting high school, it was 18 because that is when you realise that okay it is the end of the road now, for your teen kind of lifestyle now you are going to face the real world. Your peers are going to different directions some are going to be enrolled in varsities you start to get into reality with your own personal life in relations to your family and everything else,” said Mvubu.

Mvubu also explained that the unmeasurable love for literature was his main reason to join politics, reading made this man to be where he is today, he loved reading and spent almost all his time reading about the other African countries that received Democracy much earlier than South Africa.

“It is the love of literature I think I was drawn so much into politics through reading infect what they call resistance literature, from those African countries if I were to say that got their independent much earlier than South Africa so I was interested in those critiques by those writers whom I read those books from because they were now analysing the situation whereby the South Africa because I think it is the last country in Africa to attain their political freedom,” Mvubu continued.

Mvubu mentioned how everything is political in Hammarsdale even back during the apartheid Hammarsdale was known for its violence between the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the African National Congress (ANC), even with everything that was happening in the area Mvubu reveals without any fear how he voted for the ANC at that time because it had an upper and it was somehow a popular organization, and he proudly says that he has never signed any membership form in any organisation except for the EFF.

“Being in an environment where everything is politically in South Africa, being born in Hammarsdale there was no way that one could escape politics if you know the stories of the IFPs and the ANCs in the 80s and late 90s political killings what was tamed later was black on black violence which I always disagree with that phrase, I can tell you now for free I do not even know how the membership card of any other party looks like, I have never been a member of other political party though I was living in the township where the IFP was dominant then and the ANC had an upper hand because when the 1994 elections came I was under age I could not vote but next national elections I did vote and I was voting for the ANC partly because it was a popular party everyone is in this narrative of saying finally we are free but there was something that was always off about me being the volunteer of the ANC maybe it could be because of the suspicions that I already had through literature reading,” said Mvubu.

A very close colleague and friend of Themba Mvubu Blessing Gumede said that Mvubu is a man who is very humble and driven by principle, he went as far as mentioning how he loves the community especially the children. He also mentioned that Mvubu is a man who unashamedly stand for the truth inside their organization

"He is a very humble politician and he is driven by principle, the man is very principle. He love the community especially children that is why when he was elected as a councillor he donated school shoes to needy children. He always stands for the truth inside the EFF," Gumede said.

One of the Hammarsdale ward 6 community member Thokoza Ngubane had a lot to say about Mvubu he mentioned that Mvubu regularly visit local schools to do donations and check learning conditions of the schools.

"The leader Themba Mvubu has been of great help to the children of the community in Unit 4 ward 6 where he came with the program to give school shoes to needy children, he went to Khalawemuke primary school, along with his team.  He also visited different churches donating paints and sanitary pads to girls, he also assisted local football teams he funded their tournaments and assisted them to be a success," Ngubane mentioned.
