 STHEMBILE NDLOVU

Disgruntled eNgonyameni residents, South of Durban on Sunday blocked the bridge with burning tyres demanding water and electricity.

The residents had been without electricity since Tuesday, the  protest began at around 5.00 AM.

Ward 100 PR councillor, Menziwa Madlala, said that the affected community members were from ward 100 not only Ngonyameni but the whole ward. He said that the electricity problem was caused by the recent KZN floods the transformer was destroyed by the floods, but the eThekwini Municipality and Eskom are working to fix it.

“eThekwini Municipality was made aware of this, and Eskom officials are on site working to fix the electricity transformer which supply the whole of eNgonyameni. This was due to a natural disaster that Kwa-Zulu Natal province has recently encountered, we can assure the community that the power issue will be fixed before the end of the working week,” he said.

One of the furious community members Thandabantu Hlophe said the reason for the protest is because for three weeks the community had been without electricity as well as in past six years they had been without water and the community cannot suffer like this.

“The protest was because we had been without electricity for three weeks, the community is saying they cannot live in such suffering. The electricity started being a problem while we are still battling the water shortage for six years and while we still have damaged roads because of the recent floods,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of KwaNdengezi Police station Captain Sithole said the community members closed the bridge between eNgonyameni and Kwandengezi demanding to meet with the ward councillor.

“The angry community closed the bridge between KwaNdengezi and Ngonyameni as they were demanding a meeting with their councillor because of the electricity problem that has lasted for 3 weeks. No community member was harmed and the situation was put to order,” He said
